S1E17 - Soul Music

In a fight between Death and Music, who wins? Us.

Soul Music, the 16th book in the Discworld series, is an extremely long setup to two delightfully silly jokes at the end, or possibly a book-long excuse to make Josh Kirby and Paul Kidby draw Death on a motorcycle. It's our first meeting with Susan, the granddaughter of Death, as well.

We hope you like more music and music-industry puns than you can count. This is a fun book.

Our guest, Dylan Malenfant, can be found at @djMalenfant .

S1E18 - Interesting Times

Interesting Times is a challenging one from a modern perspective. It is centered around an unfortunately common fantasy trope of "pretty much East Asia". Approach with caution.

While this is probably the best Rincewind we've seen, the book is weighed down by leaning hard on a mishmash of Fantasy Asia tropes... and then there's the Silver Horde and some repeated sexual assault jokes. We're not saying DON'T read the book, but approach it with open eyes and an understanding that it overall may not sit well with you. We didn't feel comfortable deeply dissecting the Fantasy Asia stuff considering our own backgrounds, but we want to circle and highlight it to you. That being said, there are some wickedly smart jokes throughout--and ample room for TwoWind shipping.

For a much better resource on Fantasy Asia, we strongly encourage you to check out all the great work being done over at Asians Represent, both the podcast and related works.

S1E19 - Hogfather

We went a bit out of order because we deserved it. It is the glorious 25th of May and we're doing Hogfather!

Hogfather is a fun Death book, a great Susan book, and Ana's favorite. And to help us celebrate the Glorious 25th of May in style, we're joined by TV's thrice published author and president of the One Shot Podcast Network, James D'Amato. Check out his new book premiering today, which we utterly failed to ask him about during the podcast, the Ultimate Worldbuilding Guide!

S1E20 - Maskerade

We return to publication order with Maskerade, a Witch-ful sendup of Andrew Lloyd Weber. Parts of it are fun!

Maskerade! Every face a different shade... after reading Nanny Ogg's new cookbook, that is. Seeking unpaid royalties (and a young witch to replace newly married Magrat), Nanny and Granny head to Ankh-Morpork. They experience Culture, commit shenanigans, and consider questions of morality.

Meanwhile, when Sir Terry isn't making her the butt of every single fat joke he can think of, Agnes Nitt has a journey of self-exploration, feeling the twin pull of the life she wants as Perdita X Nitt, famous opera singer, and the life she knows as Agnes the witch-in-potentia.

Because this is vaguely Phantom of the Opera (actually a little less than we thought woops), we invited our good friend Coast to join us (noted Phantom expert and Locked Tomb fanatic). Coast is a person who gets excited about things on the internet. Sometimes fan-artist/writer/long-winded babbler. Can be found @coasterchild on Twitter.

S1E21 - Jingo

War comes to the Disc. Not one of those normal everyday skirmishes, but a traditional one. With Politics. And Racism. And stuck in the middle of it is our favorite suspicious bastard, Sir Samuel Vimes. Special Guest: The Internet's Scott Paladin!

While Jingo is broadly classified as a Guards book, it really is the beginning of a series of Sam Vimes books with the Watch in orbit around him. There's also a LOT of our favorite carnivorous flamingo, The Patrician himself. There's submarine action, a plot head-fake that would be at home in film noir or Tom Clancy, and lots and lots of politics.

It also marks an inflection point in Discworld novels, at least to those of us very familiar with them. Sam very much finds who he will be in the back half of the Discworld library in this book, and much of the commentary that happens around the plot is clearly Sir Terry rethinking some of his earlier easy stereotypes.

Our guest Scott Paladin can be found on twitter @scottpaladin and online at scottpaladin.com, as cohost on the Monster Mechanics Podcast @monstermpod and monsterpod.org, and as writer/director/editor on the Breathing Space, Fading Frontier audio drama @BreathingXSpacebreathingspace.lawofnames.com.

S1E22 - Feet of Clay

Yet again someone attempts to remove Vetinari from the helm of Ankh-Morpork, but instead of strict political intrigue, this time they're using the old fashioned method--poison. As Vimes expands his heart and mind to encompass the growing ranks (and even files!) of the City Watch, the book tackles issues of identity and self-definition even more pointedly than ever. This book has it all--a VERY good trans narrative, golem, a well constructed noir-style mystery, and seizing the means of production. Especially when YOU are the means of production.

Evan Saft, noted Golem enthusiast, rejoins us (with more than a moment's notice this time) to discuss one of the most loved Guards novels, Feet of Clay.

S1E23 - The Last Continent

Strewth! The gang covers The Last Continent and the last main-fiction Rincewind novel--and is joined by two friends from another hemisphere.

The Last Continent is about Fourecks, a country legally distinct from Australia because Sir Terry says so--and because it's a country of original people and accidental new inhabitants, rather than colonial powers. Also it hasn't rained for a very long time.

Pratchatis a podcast from Splendid Chaps Productions in which hosts Elizabeth Flux and Ben McKenzie have embarked on a six (ish) year mission to read every Terry Pratchett novel*, one a month, and discuss them with special guests.

Elizabeth Flux (Pratchat Library Captain) is a freelance writer with a focus on film and pop culture, and previous editor of Voiceworks magazine. She has been published in Film Ink, Metro, Junkee, The Lifted Brow, Spook and Kill Your Darlings and can be found tweeting terrible puns @ElizabethFlux. Pratchat is Elizabeth’s first podcast.

Ben McKenzie is a comedian, writer and game designer. His work includes the VR game Table of Tales: The Crooked Crown and time travel radio comedy Night Terrace (as heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra). He also teaches creative writing for 100 Story Building and comedy writing for the Australian College of the Arts. Ben tweets at @McKenzie_Ben, his favourite dinosaur is Stegosaurus, and his favourite element is helium. Ben has previous hosted and produced the podcasts Splendid Chaps, re:Discovery and On the Terrace, some of which may return.

S1E24 - Carpe Jugulum

Time for some unrefined vampire bullshit!

We pare down to just the three of us so that Justen can wax rhapsodic about Hammer Horror and Vampire Bullshit, Ana can talk about witches, and Aaron can react in dismay that neither of his two cohosts have seen Young Frankenstein.

S1E25 - The Fifth Elephant

With special guest Kat Kuhl! Deep in the heart of Uberwald, a political struggle is taking place. And because of the draw of Ankh-Morpork, these internecine struggles are spilling over on Sam Vimes's streets. Vetinari sees an opportunity, and sends Sam and Sybil to wedge things open.

The Fifth Elephant is a pivotal novel in the Discworld series. While Sir Terry lightens up (slightly) on the Hammer Horror monsters of Uberwald from Carpe Jugulum, he also retools them into very clear political allegories. It is a standout among the 41 novels--so much track is laid for the future as the author breaks Ankh-Morpork out of medieval stasis.

And you may never look at Carrot the same way again.

We are delighted to be joined by Kat Kuhl, a podcaster and creator we all were listening to well before we even had the notion that we could do this ourselves. Kat is a ttrpg game designer and storyteller who's been producing and GMing actual play podcasts since 2014. Her current project, Autonomic, is an all-ages indo-ecuadorian magic school fantasy show with heart, humor, and homework (and one of Aaron's kids' favorite media products). She can be found on twitter at @kat_kuhl_

S1E26 - The Truth

We are joined by Taylor LaBresh to discuss book 25 of the Discworld series, The Truth!

Our first new perspective character in a while, we see a lot of the fallout of The Fifth Elephant back in Ankh-Morpork as the Dwarven Cultural Revolution progresses back in the Big Wahoonie. Some old favorites return, as well--Gaspode now leading his own pack of outcasts and misfits, Vetinari on the business end of yet another attempted coup, and CMOT up to yet another scheme.

Seeing the Watch from the outside is fascinating, and the subject of quite a bit of our discussion.

Taylor LaBresh creates weird, cool, queer RPGs, podcasts, and more under the auspices of Riverhouse Games ( RiverhouseGames.Itch.io) and can be found on Twitter @LeviathanFiles. Check out Game Closet, an informal chat show with queer & LGBT+ folks in tabletop RPGs! Taylor is also the co-creator of one of Aaron's absolute favorite RPGs, Descent into Midnight, which can be found @DiMRPG.
