S1E10 - ~Faust~ Eric

We talk about a few things we like, some stuff that has aged like fine milk, and then headcanon like... five or six different better books? Also a brief discussion on Rincewind and Death's overlapping sexualities, and Justen shows off their lit chops a few times.

Weeelllll this book's problematic section isn't quite as long as Pyramids but there's a Mesoamerican parody that stuck out like a sore thumb. This book wants to be a few different things and doesn't quite do any of them--it's mostly "bad things happen near Rincewind" and historical/literary jokes. No invisible dragons, despite already being Discworld canon, and no Pope-bothering.

On the plus side, there is a high percentage of the book taken up by the Luggage being a good good boy.

The Compleat Thanography part 1: None Disc, Death Pod

Soooo several of us here are big fans of Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb trilogy and had to talk about Harrow. We invited a few guests (Jude Vais and Aly Grauer) to help with the screaming. If you haven't read Gideon or Harrow, please skip this and go read them.

Look, we didn't really have much of a plan for this, and it's pretty chaotic--and even after three hours of recording we only managed to cover around half of what we could have talked about. Seriously, though, if you haven't read the books, these episodes could spoil a lot for you. Also, as we are talking and swearing about books about lesbian space necromancers, if body horror ain't your thing, go read Moving Pictures and wait for the next regular episode.

The thread that started it all

Alyson Grauer can be found at @dreamstobecome and is an actor, author of SF, F, and speculative fiction, a dialect coach available for hire, a podcaster and voice actor (June Hymnal on the all-ages fantasy podcast Skyjacks: Courier’s Call and Aaron's daughter's favorite), and the ‘Whimsy’ of Whimsy & Artifice, creators of Warda and the Patreon exclusive “Worldforging” podcast.

Jude Vais can be found at @eremiticjude and is the cohost of Athrabeth and Garbage of the Five Rings. He is also one of Aaron's oldest friends. Mythgard Institute/Signum University

The Compleat Thanography part 2: Nourishing Soup

The dunking continues, as we sort each other into necromantic houses and then cancel the 8th House by unanimous consent. Again, this is not a normal Discography episode.

Time for some loving dunking of each other and then some less-loving dunking on certain religious zealots and houses reliant on child soldiers. Also, as we are talking and swearing about books about lesbian space necromancers, if body horror ain't your thing, go read read Moving Pictures and wait for the next episode.

S1E11 - Moving Pictures

In which Terry gives us simultaneously some decent cosmic horror and also just SO many Hollywood references. Nearly every other sentence is a deep cut or a riff on a bit of silver screen history.

In a world gone mad... 30 movie jokes a minute! CMOT Dibbler! Talking animals, featuring Gaspode the Wonder Dog! Visit Harga's House of Ribs Wizards are finally fun, because they spend most of their time swinging between Scooby-Doo and an action movie pastiche! And seriously, what's up with the elephants.

S1E12 - Reaper Man

We return to our good friend Death, who is told by our new favorite antagonists the Auditors that his services are no longer required, as he has become too close to those humans with all their chaotic emotions. With a spectacular b-plot from the wizards and a lot of complex emotions and meditations on death, life, and all the space in between, this is a good book.

Death has developed a personality, and to the auditors of reality, this is a problem. Forced into retirement, he finds himself, along with his trusty steed Binky, wandering into a small farming village. There, he is hired as a farmhand by an older lady living alone by the name of Miss Flitworth and takes on the name Bill Door. Romance, chaos, a fight with a farm implement, and a parasitic mall ensue.

S1E13 - Witches Abroad

In this book we return to the power trio of Granny, Nanny, and Magrat as they immerse themselves in the magic of stories. Most of this book is very funny and full of great ideas, but it is marred by a through-line of cultural appropriation that feels like a severe misstep even at a 30 year remove.

Magrat inherits the duties of a fairy godmother, and obviously Granny and Nanny come along to make sure the wedding is adequately broken up. There is a wonderful "British tourists on the Continent" storyline, some extremely funny murder-cat moments, the Disc's second-greatest lover, the first appearance of Dwarf Bread... and then Sir Terry decides to incorporate Voodoo as a major plotline, which is unfortunate to put it mildly. We discuss this as well as four people outside the religious and cultural practice of Voodoo can, but if this topic is upsetting, please take that into account.

S1E14 - Small Gods

This is a story about a tortoise and his boy. And an examination of the structures and tenets of western religions and philosophies. A standalone and standout among the 41 books of Discworld, Small Gods is a must-read.

Evan Saft joins us to discuss the most philosophical of the Terry Pratchett philosophy-oriented Discworld books, a story about faith, religion, and the gray space in between.

Our guest, Evan Saft, can be found at @namesequipped or at their podcast Roll Out! ft. the Young Vanguard

New Podcast: The Babylon Podject

Justen made the horrible mistake of livetweeting their first watchthrough of Babylon 5 where their friends could see. Ana and Jude summoned poor Zathras to the council chamber to edit the audio as the three friends watch (or rewatch) this classic 1990s JMS science fiction epic. No, you're not stuck in a time vortex, this is the Babylon Podject. Full episodes start January 26.

Connect with the show at @babylonpodject and at www.babylonpod.page

Justen can be found at @justenwrites

Ana can be found at @The_Mianaai

Both Ana and Justen can also be found on The Compleat Discography, a Discworld re-read podcast.

Jude Vais can be found at @eremiticjude. His other work can be found at Athrabeth - a Tolkien Podcast and at Garbage of the Five Rings.

S1E15 - Lords & Ladies

It's a warm midsummer as the three Lancre witches return home, but things are going to turn chilly on many fronts. Marital strife, coven conflicts, and the actual Fae combine in the best Witch book yet in the series. Also the first one where pTerry specifically recommends reading earlier books before diving in.

It should be noted that Justen now knows enough Discworld to point out that the wizards didn't summon Death to solve their problems in this wizard-containing story. And the Luggage has been supplanted by the Librarian as their favorite. Which, honestly, is valid.

The intro voice is provided by @AaronCatanoSaez and you should hire him for voice work.

S1E16 - Men at Arms

We are joined by Sharang Biswas, game designer/creative writer/Magpie GM/awesome friend, as we discuss the second Guards novel in the series.

We return to the rank (no file, yet) of the elite guardians of the evening, the City Watch (night). Per Vetinari's orders, they are taking on additional recruits to diversify the face of the modern watch, including a troll (Detritus, previously appearing in Moving Pictures), a dwarf (Cuddy), and a w... (Angua--if you know, you know). In a meditation on firearms, the role and purpose of police in a modern society, and what it really means to be a man (or w...) of the city, Terry takes us over towers and under sewers in a fast paced chase for the truth. And truth can be hard to come by in Ankh-Morpork when there are so many easy lies instead.

Our guest, Sharang Biswas, can be found at @SharangBiswas or at his web site.
